❄️🐠 Snow Storm Clownfish — Description & Care Guide
🐟 Description
The Snow Storm Clownfish is a designer morph of the Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). It’s known for its dramatic white patterning.
Key visual traits:
-
Body color: Almost entirely pearl white, with irregular “storm-like” blotches
-
Markings: Minimal black borders; some fish have faint outlines
-
Fins: Usually orange or black-edged depending on lineage
-
Eyes: Often darker or solid black
-
Size: 3–3.5 inches as adults
-
Sexing: All start male; the dominant one becomes female
Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive—typical clownfish behavior. Designer strains tend to be more mellow than maroon or clarkii types.
🌊 Care Requirements
📏 Tank Size
-
Minimum: 20–30 gallons
-
Ideal: 40+ gallons, especially if keeping a pair or hosting an anemone
-
They stay near a “territory,” but appreciate stable water and good oxygenation.
🧪 Water Parameters
Standard reef conditions:
-
Temperature: 75–78°F
-
Salinity: 1.024–1.026
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-
Nitrates: < 20 ppm (they tolerate more than many reef fish)
-
Phosphates: < 0.1 ppm
-
Flow: Low to moderate
Clownfish do very well in peaceful setups and are not demanding about water flow.
🍽 Diet & Feeding
Snow Storms are hardy eaters.
Feed 1–2x daily:
-
Mysis shrimp
-
Brine shrimp (enriched)
-
Pellets (TDO, Hikari Marine S, PE Pellets)
-
Flake foods like Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef
-
LRS Reef Frenzy or Nano
-
Occasional nori for variety
Clowns are omnivores, so a balanced meaty + algae diet keeps colors strong.
👥 Behavior & Social Structure
-
Can be kept single, paired, or in a harem (one female + juveniles) in large tanks
-
Smaller individuals stay male unless they become dominant
-
May defend a corner or hosting spot, especially once paired
-
Calm with most tankmates: wrasses, gobies, blennies, tangs, anthias, etc.
Avoid:
-
Maroons (very aggressive)
-
Large aggressive damsels
-
Highly territorial dottybacks in small tanks
🪸 Reef Compatibility
100% reef safe.
Snow Storms do not nip coral or inverts.
They may host:
-
Bubble-tip anemones (BTA)
-
Toadstools
-
Hammer/torch frogspawn
-
Rock structure if no host is present
Designer clowns sometimes take longer to accept anemones—but many eventually do.
💡 Special Notes
-
Extremely hardy once settled; great for beginners and reefers alike.
-
Designer Ocellaris can be slightly more prone to jaw misalignments or eye shape quirks, but Snow Storms usually have good genetics from reputable breeders.
-
Quarantine is recommended; they handle copper well if properly ramped.
