🌟 Blastomussa Wellsi – Description & Care Guide
🪸 Description
Blastomussa wellsi is a beautiful and relatively easy-to-keep Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral known for its large, fleshy polyps and vivid coloration. It is more rounded and puffier than its close relative, Blastomussa merleti.
Key Characteristics:
- Polyp Size: Large, fleshy, dome-shaped polyps
- Growth Form: Grows in a mound or dome shape as the polyps encrust a stony base
- Coloration: Wide range — neon green, red, orange, blue, purple, and rainbow varieties
- Behavior: Peaceful with little to no aggression; no long sweeper tentacles
Fun Fact: Often mistaken for a soft coral due to its puffy polyps, but it has a hard skeleton underneath.
🧪 Tank Requirements
| Parameter | Ideal Range |
| Lighting | Low to moderate (PAR 50–150) |
| Flow | Low to moderate |
| Temperature | 75–80°F (24–27°C) |
| Salinity | 1.024–1.026 SG |
| Alkalinity | 8–10 dKH |
| Calcium | 400–450 ppm |
| Magnesium | 1250–1350 ppm |
| Nutrients | Moderate nitrates (2–15 ppm), phosphate 0.03–0.1 ppm |
💡 Lighting Tips
- Low to moderate lighting brings out best color without bleaching.
- Too much light can cause the polyps to shrink or lose color.
- Looks stunning under actinic/blue spectrum lighting — great for “glow” appeal.
🌊 Flow Requirements
- Prefers gentle, indirect flow — just enough to keep detritus off its surface.
- Too much flow can cause the polyps to retract or tear.
🍽️ Feeding
Although photosynthetic, Blastomussa wellsi benefits from feeding for better growth and color:
- Foods: Reef-Roids, Coral Frenzy, small mysis or brine shrimp
- Feeding Time: Target feed at night or when tentacles are visible
- Frequency: 1–2 times per week
🧼 Care & Placement
- Peaceful coral: Can be placed near other non-aggressive LPS or soft corals.
- Best placement: Mid to bottom levels of the tank with enough space for expansion.
- Fragging: Easy — cut between polyps on the skeleton using a coral saw or bone cutters.
⚠️ Common Issues
| Problem | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Polyps shrinking | Too much light or flow | Move to a shaded, lower-flow area |
| Color fading | Nutrient deficiency or intense light | Adjust feeding and lighting |
| Tissue recession | Poor water quality or instability | Test parameters, increase stability |
