Description

Pectinia Coral (Lettuce Coral or Carnation Coral) is a beautiful and unique type of Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral known for its dramatic, ruffled, or leaf-like skeletal structures. It belongs to the family Pectiniidae, and its wavy ridges and vibrant coloration make it a standout addition to a reef tank.

🔹 Description

  • Scientific Name: Pectinia spp.

  • Common Names: Lettuce Coral, Carnation Coral, Ruffled Coral

  • Appearance: Features wavy, leafy projections resembling lettuce or petals. Colors range from green, yellow, and brown to more exotic hues like pink, purple, and blue under actinic lighting.

  • Lighting Reaction: Often fluoresces under blue/actinic lighting, making it popular in display tanks.

🔹 Care Requirements

Category Details
Lighting Moderate to High (not overly intense)
Water Flow Moderate, random flow (too strong can damage tissue)
Placement Lower to mid-levels of the tank, with space to accommodate growth
Aggressiveness Aggressive; has long sweeper tentacles for stinging nearby corals
Feeding Benefits from target feeding with meaty foods (e.g., mysis, reef roids)
Water Parameters
Temperature 76–82°F (24–28°C)
Salinity 1.023–1.025
pH 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity 8–12 dKH
Calcium 400–450 ppm
Magnesium 1250–1350 ppm
Nitrates/Phosphates Low (but not zero) – stable conditions are key

🔹 Tips for Success

  • Space: Give it plenty of space away from other corals due to its long stinging sweeper tentacles (up to 6–8 inches).

  • Acclimation: Acclimate slowly to avoid light shock or stress.

  • Monitoring: Watch for tissue recession, which can be a sign of poor water quality or inadequate lighting/flow.

  • Fragging: Fragging is possible but challenging due to its complex skeletal structure and sensitivity.

🔹 Compatibility

Avoid placing near other LPS or soft corals that can’t defend themselves. Suitable tankmates include peaceful reef-safe fish and non-aggressive invertebrates.
