🐌 Mexican Turbo Snail — Description & Care Guide

📌 Scientific Name: Turbo fluctuosa

📌 Common Names: Mexican Turbo Snail, Turbo Snail, Giant Turbo

📌 Origin: Eastern Pacific — especially coastal Mexico and Baja California

📌 Type: Marine Herbivorous Snail

🔍 Description

  • Appearance:

    • Large, rounded, heavy turban-shaped shell

    • Shell color ranges from greenish-brown to tan with iridescent nacre (mother-of-pearl) inside

    • Size: Up to 2 inches (5 cm) or more when fully grown

  • Movement: Strong and steady grazer; can knock over small frags or loose rock if not secured

🧪 Aquarium Care

🏠 Tank Size

  • Minimum: 20 gallons

  • Ideal stocking: 1 Turbo per 10–15 gallons (fewer needed due to their high appetite)

🌡️ Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.025 SG

  • Ammonia/Nitrites: 0 ppm — like all inverts, sensitive to toxins

🧬 Behavior & Role

  • Temperament: Peaceful

  • Reef Safe: ✅ Yes — does not harm corals or other inverts

  • Main Benefit: Heavy-duty algae control, especially for:

    • Green film algae

    • Diatoms

    • Hair algae (to some extent)

  • Activity: Active during day and night; spends time on rocks, glass, and tank walls

🍽️ Diet & Feeding

  • Diet: Strict herbivore

  • Consumes:

    • Film algae

    • Hair algae

    • Diatoms

    • Biofilm

  • In low-algae tanks, supplement with:

    • Nori (seaweed sheets)

    • Algae wafers

🪸 Compatibility

  • Compatible with:

    • Reef-safe fish

    • Corals

    • Shrimp, snails, and other peaceful inverts

  • Avoid:

    • Predators (e.g., some wrasses, puffers, or crabs)

✅ Pros

  • Very effective algae grazer

  • Long-lived and hardy in tropical tanks

  • Peaceful and completely reef-safe

  • Attractive shell with pearly interior

⚠️ Cons

  • Can knock over frags and unsecured corals due to size and strength

  • Consumes algae quickly — may starve if algae isn’t supplemented

  • Cannot always flip itself over if it falls

  • Sensitive to copper and rapid water chemistry shifts

💡 Tip:

Use Turbo snails sparingly — they’re powerful grazers, but overstocking can deplete your tank’s natural algae quickly. Consider mixing them with smaller snails like Cerith, Trochus, or Nassarius for a balanced cleanup crew.
