🌿 Clove Polyp Coral – Description & Care Guide

🪸 Description

Clove Polyps (Clavularia spp.) are a type of soft coral known for their feathery, flower-like polyps that extend from a creeping mat (coenenchyme). They add beautiful movement and texture to reef tanks, often forming dense mats that sway gently with water flow.

Common Names: Clove Polyps, Clavularia, Palm Tree Polyps, Fern Polyps, Daisy Polyps
Color Morphs: Neon green, blue, purple, pink, metallic, rainbow-tipped

šŸ”Ž Key Features

  • Growth Form: Colonial — spreads by mat-like encrusting tissue

  • Polyp Shape: Long stalks with fringed, clove-shaped tops (like mini palm trees)

  • Texture: No hard skeleton — fully soft tissue

  • Movement: Constant waving, adds lively motion to the tank

🧪 Tank Requirements

Parameter Ideal Range
Lighting Moderate to high (PAR 80–200)
Flow Moderate to strong
Temperature 75–80°F (24–27°C)
Salinity 1.025–1.026 SG
Alkalinity 8–12 dKH
Nutrients Nitrate: 5–15 ppm; Phosphate: 0.03–0.1 ppm

šŸ’” Lighting Tips

  • Grows well under moderate to high light.

  • More intense lighting can bring out vivid fluorescent colors.

  • Acclimate slowly when introducing under strong LEDs or T5s.

🌊 Flow Requirements

  • Enjoy moderate to strong flow — keeps polyps moving and debris-free.

  • Too little flow can lead to detritus buildup and algae.

šŸ½ļø Feeding

  • Photosynthetic – does not require direct feeding.

  • Can benefit from occasional fine particulate coral foods, such as:

    • Phytoplankton, amino acids, Reef-Roids

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2Ɨ per week (optional)

🧼 Care & Placement

  • Aggression: Peaceful — does not sting neighbors

  • Placement: Lower rockwork, frag racks, or island-style areas with room to grow

  • Growth Rate: Fast — can overgrow and smother nearby corals

  • Fragging: Very easy — cut sections of the mat with a scalpel or scissors

āš ļø Common Issues

Problem Cause Fix
Fading color Low light or low nutrients Increase light or feed lightly
Overgrowth/smothering High growth rate Frag or trim regularly
Closed polyps Poor flow, detritus buildup Increase flow or clean area
Algae in mat Excess nutrients, low flow Improve flow and nutrient control

🌿 Tips for Success

  • Great for adding motion and covering bare rock or overflow pipes.

  • Place on isolated rocks or islands to control overgrowth.

  • Regularly trim or frag to prevent mat from invading other corals.

  • Can be kept in nano tanks or large displays.
