Description

Peppermint Hogfish / Masuda’s Hogfish (Bodianus masudai)
Rare, vibrant, and full of personality—an eye-catching addition for advanced reef keepers.

Description:

The Peppermint Hogfish, also known as Masuda’s Hogfish, is a beautifully patterned and somewhat rare species of Bodianus. Native to deeper reefs in the Western Pacific (especially Japan), this fish features alternating red and white horizontal stripes that give it a striking “peppermint candy” look. It’s smaller than many other hogfish species, making it suitable for moderately sized tanks.

  • Size: Up to 5 inches

  • Coloration: Red and white horizontal striping; may intensify with age

  • Lifespan: 5–8+ years with proper care

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; bold but not overly hostile

Care Requirements:

Tank Size:

  • Minimum 55 gallons

  • Larger tanks preferred for long-term success or with tank mates

Diet:

  • Carnivorous; thrives on a varied, protein-rich diet

  • Feed 2–3 times daily

  • Include:

    • Mysis shrimp

    • Brine shrimp

    • Finely chopped seafood

    • High-quality marine pellets or frozen carnivore blends

  • Known to eat small inverts in the wild

Behavior:

  • Active swimmer and very inquisitive

  • Can be aggressive toward smaller fish or new tank mates

  • May jump—lid is strongly recommended

  • Will explore rockwork and often hover mid-water or near caves

Reef Compatibility:

  • With Caution

    • Generally reef-safe with corals

    • May eat small ornamental shrimp, feather dusters, and other tiny inverts

    • Risk increases as the fish matures

  • Not ideal for tanks with nano shrimp or delicate invertebrates

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 74–80°F

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.023–1.025

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Aquascape Tips:

  • Provide caves, rock overhangs, and open swimming space

  • Appreciates areas with dim lighting and strong water flow (like natural deep reef settings)

Special Notes:

  • Not commonly found in the trade; considered a rare collector’s fish

  • Acclimates best in stable, well-established systems

  • Avoid housing with very small fish or crustaceans

  • Can coexist with semi-aggressive tank mates if added carefully
